With the engine, transmission and tailshaft in place, it was time to take the Supra out of the garage for the first time since the beginning of the project, and tow it to an exhaust shop to get a new exhaust system fitted. The old system had long since been discarded, and it was too small to support the gas flow of the 2JZ anyway.
I chose Hinterland Performance Exhaust to do the work after a friend had a similar job done there with excellent results. They are known for costing a bit more than most other shops, but their work is top-notch. I asked them to build an exhaust with these specifications:
3" mild steel tube (with mandrel bends)
single muffler
high-flow catalytic converter
Custom dump pipe, HPC coated
3" tip, painted matt black (for stealth factor).
Here's a few pics of the results. Unfortunately the photos don't do it justice; you need to see it up close to appreciate the workmanship here. Definitely worth every cent!
I also had the intercooler piping done at the same time. I specified 3" mild steel tube, HPC coated to prevent internal rusting. Once again I had the pipes painted matt black so they don't stand out. The turbo side pipe runs through a hole in the inner guard, while the inlet side pipe goes through the top of the radiator support panel next to the radiator. A silicone 90-degree bend is used in this section as a steel pipe cannot make such a sharp turn.
