As with any imported engine with an unknown history, it's a good idea to change the timing belt as soon as you get it. In the case of the 2JZ, the crank pulley bolt is tightened to 300Nm, so getting it off is no simple task! I decided to wait until the tailshaft was installed before I attempted removal - that way it can be put in gear to prevent the engine from turning as you try to loosen the bolt. Unfortunately that plan didn't work - the clutch slipped and the bolt didn't loosen at all! In the end I jammed a breaker bar against the concrete floor and hit the starter. It sounds dodgy, but it works very well!
Here's a few pics of the process:
With the timing belt out of the way, it was a perfect opportunity to replace the water pump. Why replace it you ask? The donor car had a hydraulic engine fan which is driven by a hydraulic pump integrated into the water pump assembly. I decided this was too complex and mostly unnecessary, so I sourced a conventional water pump and a clutch fan from a JZA80 Supra. Here's what the Aristo water pump looks like:
And here's the JZA80 water pump, which is far simpler by comparison:
